Why Michael Carrick May Not Yet Be Guaranteed Manchester United Job

Impressive results under caretaker boss hide underlying concerns over long-term sustainability

Michael Carrick has transformed Manchester United since taking interim charge in January, but statistical analysis suggests the club may still hesitate before handing him the role permanently.

United have collected more Premier League points than any other side during Carrick’s spell in charge, winning 10 of his 14 matches and significantly boosting their hopes of securing Champions League qualification.

However, deeper performance data indicates that the club’s recent surge may not be sustainable over a longer period.

United Outperforming Expected Numbers

While United’s results under Carrick have been outstanding, their underlying numbers tell a more cautious story.

The team have scored far more goals than expected from the quality of chances created, despite eight Premier League clubs generating better expected goals figures during the same period.

United’s attack has relied heavily on exceptional finishing from key players, including Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Casemiro, all of whom have converted chances at unusually high rates.

Only Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest has been statistically more clinical in front of goal during Carrick’s tenure.

Defensively, goalkeeper Senne Lammens has also performed above expectations with a series of important saves that prevented goals.

Results Better Than Overall Performances

Despite the positive results, United have not dominated matches as consistently as they did earlier in the season under former manager Ruben Amorim.

The side are averaging fewer shots per game under Carrick while also allowing opponents slightly more opportunities.

Performance metrics based on expected goals difference — commonly used to measure long-term team strength — suggest United’s current form could eventually decline if the underlying displays do not improve.

Historical Premier League trends show clubs with stronger xG numbers usually sustain title challenges, while teams overperforming their data often regress over time.

Examples this season include Aston Villa and Sunderland, whose results dropped after earlier periods of overachievement.

United Owners Face Major Decision

Carrick’s supporters argue that a summer transfer window and tactical adjustments could help him build a more balanced and sustainable team next season.

The former United midfielder has also earned praise for improving morale and restoring belief within the squad following a difficult campaign.

However, the club’s hierarchy must now decide whether Carrick’s impressive short-term results are enough evidence that he can lead one of football’s biggest clubs over the long term.

While recent victories have strengthened his case, the statistics suggest Manchester United may still have difficult questions to answer before making a final decision on their next permanent manager.
