Ashley Young has announced he will retire from professional football at the age of 40, bringing an end to a career spanning more than two decades.
The former England national football team international revealed the decision on social media, stating that his long journey in the game is nearing its conclusion.
Career across top clubs
Young began his professional career with Watford in 2003 before going on to represent Aston Villa, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Everton.
He finished his career with Ipswich Town, having joined the club in 2025. Initially a winger, Young successfully transitioned into a full-back later in his career.
Trophy-laden journey
During his time at Manchester United, Young won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League. He also secured the Serie A title during his spell in Italy with Inter Milan.
International career
Young made his England debut in 2007 and went on to earn 39 caps, scoring seven goals for his country.
Final focus on promotion
Despite an injury-hit season with limited appearances, Young remains focused on helping Ipswich achieve promotion from the Championship.
The club head into their final game against Queens Park Rangers in contention for an automatic promotion spot, sitting just ahead of Millwall and Middlesbrough.
Young said he wanted to retire on his own terms, adding that his immediate priority is ensuring Ipswich return to the Premier League.
