Champions League Classic: PSG Edge Bayern 5-4 in Record-Breaking Semi-Final

Paris :  In what will go down as one of the most electrifying nights in Champions League history, Paris Saint-Germain edged Bayern Munich 5-4 in the first leg of their semi-final at the Parc des Princes, setting a new record for the most goals ever in a Champions League semi-final first leg.

A Nine-Goal Spectacle That Redefined the Semi-Final

From the opening whistle, the match moved at a ferocious pace. Bayern drew first blood on 17 minutes when captain Harry Kane converted a penalty, becoming the first English player to score in six consecutive Champions League games.

But PSG responded with ferocity:

24′ — Khvicha Kvaratskhelia curled in a stunning equalise.

33′ — João Neves headed PSG in front before Bayern struck back through Michael Olise to make it 2-2 by the 41st minute.

Right before half-time, Ousmane Dembélé converted a VAR-awarded penalty to put PSG up 3-2.

PSG’s Charge and Bayern’s Response

The second half explosion saw PSG extend their advantage:

56′ — Kvaratskhelia scored again for PSG.

58′ — Dembélé’s low strike off the post made it 5-2.

With momentum and energy still high, Bayern refused to go quietly. Goals from Dayot Upamecano (65′) and Luis Díaz (68′) narrowed the deficit to 5-4, sending the crowd into a frenzy as the match became a true testament to attacking football.

Numbers That Tell the Story

This contest wasn’t just thrilling — it was historic:

9 Goals — the most scored in a Champions League semi-final first leg even.

5 goals in one half — another semi-final record, achieved before the break.

PSG and Bayern each joined an elite group of teams with 40+ goals in a single Champions League season — a competition first.

Harry Kane’s penalty pushed his tally to 13 goals in the competition this season, placing him among the tournament’s most prolific scorers.

PSG boss Luis Enrique acknowledged both sides’ efforts:

“I’ve never seen a game with that rhythm before. You have to congratulate the opponents and our players — it was that incredible.”

Bayern defender Jonathan Tah remained optimistic despite the loss:

“We showed what kind of team we are. We can win by two goals at home. We’re confident going into the second leg.”

The tie is set up for a dramatic conclusion when Bayern host PSG at the Allianz Arena on 6 May 2026. With nine goals already on the board and countless narrative threads tied to both teams’ ambitions, this semi-final promises even more drama as Europe’s elite prepare for a pivotal showdown.
