Chennai Super Kings (CSK) delivered a comprehensive performance against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Match 22 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the historic MA Chidambaram Stadium, turning the tide of their season with a convincing win.
CSK elected to bat first under lights in Chennai and posted a formidable total. Ruturaj Gaikwad captained the side, making full use of home conditions, while Sanju Samson provided a crucial foundation. Although Samson was dismissed in the middle overs, the team’s collective batting effort ensured a competitive score at the end of their 20 overs.
The defining chapter of the match came with the ball, where Afghan left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad produced a game-changing spell that dismantled KKR’s top order. Ahmad struck key blows in quick succession, dismissing Ajinkya Rahane and Cameron Green in back-to-back deliveries, signalling a sharp shift in momentum. With the wicket of Rahane, he also achieved the milestone of 50 career IPL wickets, becoming only the second Afghan bowler to reach this landmark in the tournament’s history.
KKR’s chase never truly gained momentum. The early loss of wickets put enormous pressure on their middle order, and despite efforts from Ramandeep Singh and Rovman Powell, the required rate steadily climbed beyond reach. The visitors finished well short of the target, sealing a confidence-boosting win for CSK.
This victory marks a significant confidence builder for Chennai, who had been struggling earlier in the campaign but now begin to climb the standings with a strong collective show in both batting and bowling. For KKR, the wait for a first win of the season continues, with questions around their batting depth and bowling balance.
