Rayan Cherki continues to split opinion in English football as the creative midfielder dazzles fans while frustrating some pundits.

The Manchester City player has become known for his flair and showmanship since arriving from Olympique Lyonnais last year.

Showmanship sparks debate

Cherki grabbed attention during the EFL Cup final when he juggled the ball mid-match, winked at supporters after being fouled by Ben White and playfully shoved manager Pep Guardiola at the final whistle.

The incident divided opinion. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville described the behaviour as arrogant, while former Premier League manager Alan Pardew called it disrespectful.

Yet many supporters praised the Frenchman for bringing excitement and unpredictability back to the game.

Creative impact

Cherki joined City for around £30m as a long-term replacement for club legend Kevin De Bruyne.

The 22-year-old has already made a strong impact in the Premier League this season, scoring three goals and providing eight assists.

His creativity has also been reflected in key metrics, with numerous big chances created and through balls played — numbers that trail only Bruno Fernandes.

Mixed reactions

Some critics believe Cherki must improve his consistency and work rate. Former France national football team striker Christophe Dugarry said the midfielder still has much to prove and warned comparisons with Zinedine Zidane are premature.

Despite the criticism, several players have praised his ability. France captain Kylian Mbappé described Cherki as having a “gift”, while City captain Bernardo Silva called him a special talent.

Upcoming test

Cherki will look to make another impression when Manchester City face Liverpool FC in the FA Cup quarter-final.

Interestingly, Liverpool were previously linked with the midfielder before choosing to sign Florian Wirtz instead.

The French playmaker will now aim to show why City took the gamble on his talent.
