Teenage forward Chido Obi is focusing on academy football again as he continues his development at Manchester United.

The 18-year-old made several first-team appearances last season but has largely returned to youth competitions this campaign as the club manages his progress.

Early first-team exposure

Twelve months ago, Obi had already played four senior matches and later added four more appearances, including his first start. He also scored his first senior goals in a post-season friendly win in Hong Kong.

Then-manager Ruben Amorim had promoted the striker to the senior squad, believing he was physically stronger than many players in his age group.

However, since returning from United’s pre-season tour, Obi’s first-team involvement has been limited. His only recent senior appearance was as an unused substitute against Wolverhampton Wanderers in December.

Focus on academy development

This season Obi has been concentrating on youth competitions. He is expected to feature in the Premier League Under-21 International Cup quarter-final against Real Madrid at Old Trafford.

He is also preparing for key academy fixtures against Crystal Palace, including the FA Youth Cup semi-final and the Under-18 Premier League Cup final.

United rejected loan enquiries for the striker in January, deciding it was better for him to continue developing within the club.

Impressive youth performances

Obi has scored 15 goals this season across various youth competitions. The Denmark Under-21 international has also impressed in recent matches, including scoring four goals in a Premier League 2 game against Leicester City.

Academy coach Adam Lawrence said the forward is in a “really good place” and has benefited from a consistent training routine.

Looking ahead

Obi recently returned after recovering from a concussion suffered in a match against Chelsea Under-21s in March.

Coaches at the club believe he has significant potential, but his long-term future will depend on how he continues to perform and develop over the coming months.
