Co-hosts Sri Lanka delivered a dominant performance in Kandy to thrash Oman by 105 runs and register their second consecutive victory at the 2026 T20 World Cup.

A powerful batting display saw Sri Lanka post 225-5, the highest total of this year’s tournament so far, before their bowlers restricted Oman to 120-9 in reply.

Shanaka Blazes Record Breaking Fifty

Captain Dasun Shanaka stole the show with a breathtaking late assault. Walking to the crease in the 14th over with Sri Lanka well placed at 136-3, Shanaka unleashed a flurry of boundaries, smashing two fours and five sixes in a stunning 19-ball half-century.

It was the fastest T20 international fifty by a Sri Lankan, eclipsing his own previous record of 20 balls set against India in 2023. The explosive knock provided the perfect finishing touch to an already imposing total.

Earlier, Pavan Rathnayake’s blistering 28-ball 60 and Kusal Mendis’ composed 61 from 45 deliveries rebuilt the innings after early wickets in the powerplay. Their partnership laid the foundation for Sri Lanka’s second-highest total in T20 World Cup history.

Oman Struggle in Steep Chase

Chasing a daunting 226, Oman never looked in contention. Only Muhammad Nadeem and Wasim Ali managed to offer resistance. Nadeem battled to an unbeaten 53 from 56 balls, reaching his half-century after 52 deliveries, while Wasim struck a brisk 27 off 20 before falling.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers maintained tight control throughout, with Maheesh Theekshana returning impressive figures of 2-11 as Oman finished well short of the target.

The victory follows Sri Lanka’s opening win over Ireland and strengthens their position in Group B. They next face Australia in Kandy on Monday, while Oman, now with two defeats, take on Ireland in Colombo.
