India sealed the T20 series against New Zealand with a dominant eight-wicket win in Guwahati, powered by a breathtaking knock from Abhishek Sharma.
Chasing 154, India finished the job in just 10 overs, with Abhishek smashing an unbeaten 68 off 20 balls and Suryakumar Yadav adding 57 not out from 26 deliveries.
Explosive opening sets tone
After Sanju Samson was bowled for a first-ball duck by Matt Henry, Abhishek and Ishan Kishan took control immediately. The duo added 53 runs in just 19 balls, putting New Zealand under early pressure.
Kishan scored 28 off 13 before falling to Ish Sodhi, but the momentum never slowed.
Abhishek brought up his half-century in just 14 balls, reaching the landmark with a six at the end of the powerplay.
Record knock lights up Guwahati
Only Yuvraj Singh, who reached his fifty in 12 balls against England in 2007, has been quicker for India in T20 internationals.
Abhishek struck seven fours and five sixes, showing fearless intent from the first over.
“I just wanted to back my shots,” Abhishek said after the match. “When the pitch is good, you have to make the most of it.”
His innings ensured India stayed far ahead of the required run rate throughout the chase.
Bowlers lay strong foundation
Earlier, India’s bowlers kept New Zealand to 153 for nine in 20 overs. Glenn Phillips top-scored with 48, but struggled to find consistent support.
Jasprit Bumrah was the standout performer, finishing with figures of 3 for 17. Hardik Pandya and Ravi Bishnoi picked up two wickets each to apply pressure in the middle overs.
“Bumrah’s spell changed the game,” captain Suryakumar Yadav said. “He gave us control early.”
Series sealed with confidence
The win gave India a 3-0 lead in the five-match series, making the remaining games dead rubbers.
It also served as a strong response after India’s recent ODI series loss to New Zealand.
With the T20 World Cup starting on 7 February, India look well on track to defend their title.
The fourth T20 will be played in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday, where the hosts will aim to extend their dominance.
