India U19 Remain Unbeaten, Enter Super Six with Seven-Wicket Win Over New Zealand

Bulawayo: India’s U19 cricket team maintained their flawless run in the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, defeating New Zealand by seven wickets (DLS method) to finish the group stage with three wins out of three at
Queens Sports Club Ground, Bulawayo on Saturday.

After being sent in to bat, New Zealand struggled early, collapsing to 17/3 in just 7.1 overs. Despite the reduced 37-over format, the Kiwi lower order showed resistance, with Jacob Cotter (23), Callum Samson (37*), and Selwin Sanjay (28) guiding the team to a total of 135.

The Kiwi top order was dismantled by a disciplined Indian bowling attack, with RS Ambrish leading the charge with an outstanding 4/29, supported by Henil Patel’s probing seam (3/23), and the spin trio of Khilan Patel, Kanishk Chouhan, and Mohammad Enaan keeping the pressure tight.

Backed by committed fielding on a soggy outfield, India capitalized on the loose shots of their opponents to deliver a commanding performance.

Chasing the modest DLS-adjusted target of 130, India were never in danger. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre led the charge with a high-octane partnership, both striking at over 150. Vaibhav provided the initial spark, while Ayush anchored the innings with a commanding half-century.

Even after their dismissals, Vihaan Malhotra and Vedant Trivedi finished the chase with ease in just 13.3 overs, sealing India’s perfect record in Group B.

India will face Zimbabwe on Tuesday in their first Super Six encounter, while New Zealand take on Pakistan. Tougher challenges await with Super Six clashes against Zimbabwe (January 27) and Pakistan (February 1) lined up.

India captain Ayush Mhatre praised the team’s adaptability and composure under pressure, especially in rain-affected conditions.
“The boys have really played well and shown character and a strong attitude,” Mhatre said.

“It was not easy, especially with rain interruptions, but credit to the boys for sticking to the game plan and executing it perfectly. They are mature enough to adapt to different situations and back their basics.”
With confidence high and momentum on their side, India head into the Super Six stage as one of the favorites for the title.
