Barça Women Claim Sixth Spanish Super Cup After Hard-Fought Win Over Real Madrid

Castellón: FC Barcelona Women lifted their sixth Spanish Super Cup title with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Real Madrid in Saturday’s final at the Estadio Castalia in Castellón.

The match was decided in injury time when Alexia Putellas converted a penalty, sealing the win after Esmee Brugts had opened the scoring in the first half.

The final was as competitive as expected, with silverware on the line. Barça dominated possession early, while Real Madrid sat back, hoping to strike on the counter. Despite controlling much of the game, Barcelona struggled to create clear chances in the opening minutes.

The breakthrough came in the 28th minute when Brugts headed in a corner from Mapi León, giving Barça a 1-0 lead. Real Madrid nearly equalized just before halftime, with Dabritz seeing her header crash against the crossbar.

In the second half, Madrid increased the pressure, keeping Barça on the back foot at times. Misa Rodríguez, Madrid’s goalkeeper, produced several spectacular saves to deny Pajor and Graham Hansen, even managing a double save from Pina. Madrid created opportunities late through Caicedo and Weir, but Barça looked the more likely to score.

Finally, in added time, Putellas calmly converted a penalty, sending Rodríguez the wrong way and making it 2-0, confirming Barça’s triumph.

“It was a great game, worthy of a final, from both teams,” said Barcelona midfielder Patri Guijarro, the match MVP.

The victory marked Barça’s fifth consecutive Supercopa, a clean sweep since 2022. Despite the scoreline, Real Madrid showed significant progress, pushing Barcelona closer than in any recent meeting. Madrid won their first encounter against Barça last year, signaling a narrowing gap in the women’s game.

Barcelona dominated possession 67% to 33%, with 12 shots on target to Madrid’s one, yet Madrid’s resilience kept the match competitive until the final whistle.

For Real Madrid, the wait for a first trophy continues. The team, founded in 2020, have reached three finals without success: the 2023 Copa de la Reina, the 2025 Supercopa, and now the 2026 Supercopa. Their attention now shifts to the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where they will face Paris FC in a playoff to reach the quarterfinals against Barcelona.

Barça, meanwhile, continue to cement their dominance in Spain and Europe, boasting three Champions League titles and six finals appearances. Saturday’s final highlighted that while Madrid are closing the gap, Barcelona remain the team to beat.

Final Score:
Barcelona Women 2–0 Real Madrid
