Champions League: Barcelona Fight Back, Liverpool Cruise as Bayern and Juventus March On

The UEFA Champions League delivered another night of gripping football on Wednesday, featuring dramatic turnarounds, commanding away wins and historic milestones across Europe. Barcelona showed resilience to overcome Slavia Praha in a goal-filled contest, Liverpool impressed in Marseille, while Bayern Munich, Juventus and Newcastle United strengthened their knockout ambitions with crucial victories.

Barcelona survive Slavia scare in Prague

Last season’s semi-finalists FC Barcelona showed their resilience with a thrilling 4–2 comeback win away to Slavia Praha.
The hosts stunned Barça early through Vasil Kušej, but Fermín López responded in style with two superb first-half goals. A bizarre own goal by Robert Lewandowski from a corner sent the teams level into the break.

Substitute Dani Olmo swung the contest back in Barcelona’s favour with a stunning long-range effort before Lewandowski made amends, finishing from close range after Marcus Rashford’s delivery to seal the points. The Polish striker’s strike was his 114th in UEFA club competitions, while Fermín López earned Player of the Match honours.

Six-time champions Liverpool FC boosted their top-eight hopes with a polished 3–0 win over Olympique de Marseille in France.
Dominik Szoboszlai’s clever first-half free-kick gave the visitors control, before an own goal from Gerónimo Rulli doubled the advantage. Cody Gakpo rounded off a slick performance deep into stoppage time. Szoboszlai was deservedly named Player of the Match as Liverpool strengthened their league-phase position.

Kane leads Bayern to historic milestone

A second-half brace from Harry Kane guided Bayern Munich to a 2–0 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise, making the Bavarians just the second club to reach 250 Champions League wins.

Kane headed in from a corner before converting from the spot during a frantic four-minute spell. Despite being reduced to ten men following Minjae Kim’s red card, Bayern held firm. Kane later missed another penalty but still climbed to sixth on the all-time UEFA club goalscoring list with 71 goals.

Juventus, Newcastle and Athletic Club impress

Juventus continued their strong run with a 2–0 home win against Benfica, courtesy of second-half strikes from Khéphren Thuram and Weston McKennie.

In England, Newcastle United recorded a comfortable 3–0 victory over PSV Eindhoven, with Yoane Wissa starring in his first Champions League start.

Meanwhile, Athletic Club produced one of the comebacks of the night, scoring three times in a devastating 16-minute second-half spell to defeat Atalanta 3–2 in Bergamo.

Late drama and hard-fought draws

In Azerbaijan, Qarabağ edged Eintracht Frankfurt 3–2 thanks to Bahlul Mustafazade’s dramatic stoppage-time winner.

Elsewhere, Galatasaray and Atlético de Madrid shared the spoils in a 1–1 draw in Istanbul, while Chelsea FC edged past Pafos FC 1–0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to Moisés Caicedo’s late header.

The road ahead

With one league-phase matchday remaining, the battle for automatic qualification and play-off spots is intensifying. Heavyweights have asserted themselves, surprise packages are still alive, and Matchday 8 promises another night of high stakes and Champions League drama.
