RTC Mechanic’s Grit Fuels Medal-Winning Runs — Can Passion Ever Retire?

Vijayawada : While most prepare to slow down as retirement nears, Pothumarthi Ramakrishna, a deputy mechanic at the RTC Auto Nagar depot, is still running strong — literally. The 59-year-old long-distance runner has won over 220 medals across state, national and international events, proving that grit and discipline can outpace age.

According to The New Indian Express, Ramakrishna hails from Amudalapalli village in Krishna district and balances demanding mechanical work with rigorous training. His journey began modestly — he once ran a state-level marathon barefoot, clocking 3 hours 28 minutes, a performance that first brought him recognition. (Source: The New Indian Express)

Over the years, Ramakrishna has competed in races ranging from 5 km runs to full marathons, recently completing a 42.195-km marathon in 5 hours 15 minutes. Despite limited resources early in his career, his consistency and determination kept pushing him forward.

“I still have the hunger to run and win,” Ramakrishna told The New Indian Express, adding that once he retires — with about 30 months of service remaining — he plans to train twice a day and chase more laurels for the State.

Beyond medals, his contribution to society stands out. Every morning at the Siddhartha Engineering College ground in Kanuru, he trains students and employees free of cost, often providing shoes to those who cannot afford them. Many of his trainees have gone on to become police personnel and PET teachers, turning sport into a pathway for livelihood. (Source: The New Indian Express)

Ramakrishna’s story is a powerful reminder that dedication knows no age — and that true success lies not just in medals, but in inspiring others to run their own race.
