A Star Is Born: Bethell Century Fuels England Fightback on Day 4 of Fifth Test

The Sydney Cricket Ground witnessed the emergence of a new Ashes name on the fourth day of the fifth Test as Jacob Bethell produced a stunning maiden first-class century, spearheading England’s dramatic revival against Australia.

Batting with composure well beyond his 22 years, Bethell reached the landmark in style, advancing down the track to Beau Webster and lofting a full delivery over mid-on. The moment sparked emotional celebrations in the stands, with Bethell’s family visibly moved and the Barmy Army roaring their approval after a difficult tour

Jacob Bethell’s remarkable rise continued to light up the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground as the 22-year-old played a defining role in England’s fightback, turning a match that once seemed firmly in Australia’s grasp into a tense and finely balanced contest.

The Test began with England batting first and posting a competitive 384, built around a sublime 160 from Joe Root, his second century of the series. Australia replied in dominant fashion, amassing 567 on the back of commanding centuries from Travis Head (163) and Steve Smith (138), securing a daunting 183-run first-innings lead.

England’s second innings initially showed promise through Bethell, whose assured strokeplay injected belief into the visitors’ dressing room. However, the innings briefly wobbled after Tea when Harry Brook after scoring 42 and Will Jacks departed in quick succession, offering Australia a window back into the match.

Bethell, though, stood firm. Batting with composure and confidence well beyond his years, he steadied the innings and found crucial support from Ben Duckett and Brook ensuring England not only erased the deficit but pushed ahead once more.

As play continues, England’s intent is clear: build as big a lead as possible before handing Australia a challenging fourth-innings chase on a surface expected to deteriorate on the final day.

With Bethell still at the crease alongside wicketkeeper-batsman Jamie Smith and England’s lead steadily growing, momentum has decisively shifted, setting up a fascinating finish to the Sydney Test.
