New Delhi : In a major development ending weeks of uncertainty, India’s premier football league, the Indian Super League (ISL), will finally begin its 2025–26 season on February 14, 2026 — much to the delight of fans nationwide. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya after a high-level meeting involving the government, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and all 14 participating clubs.

“There was a lot of speculation regarding the ISL,” Mandaviya said, “but today the government, football federation and all 14 clubs — including Mohun Bagan and East Bengal — have decided that the ISL will start on February 14. All clubs will participate.”

What’s Happening and Why It Matters

The ISL had been on hold for months following the expiry of its commercial partner agreement, leaving players, clubs and supporters in limbo. With the February 14 date now confirmed, organisers have set up a central fund to ensure smooth execution of the league while a long-term commercial deal is finalised.

According to AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, a ₹25 crore central pool has been created to support the ISL’s staging this season. AIFF will contribute a significant portion until a commercial partner is secured, ensuring clubs can plan and compete without further delay.

League Format & Participation

The upcoming season is expected to feature 91 matches, with clubs facing each other in a home-and-away format, although detailed logistics are still being finalised.

All traditional powerhouses — from Kerala Blasters and FC Goa to Bengaluru FC and NorthEast United — have confirmed participation, promising fans a season full of action and rivalries.

The decision came after intense discussions to break the impasse caused by financial and structural issues in Indian football. Government intervention helped smooth over differences, leading to a consensus that will see both the ISL and the I-League (India’s second division) kick off around the same time.

Football insiders say the February start may offer a perfect “Valentine’s Day gift” for fans craving competitive action after months of wait.

As preparations ramp up, all eyes will be on kick-off night on February 14, when the long-awaited return of top-tier Indian football finally becomes reality.
