Ten-man Mali beat Tunisia 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time to reach the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations. The decisive spot-kick was converted by El Bilal Touré after Tunisia missed two efforts, with Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra making crucial saves during the shootout (Confederation of African Football).

Early red card changes the game
Mali played most of the contest with 10 men after right-back Woyo Coulibaly was shown a straight red card in the 26th minute for a studs-up challenge on Hannibal Mejbri. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Mali remained compact and limited Tunisia to few clear chances (Confederation of African Football).

Late drama in regulation time
Tunisia broke the deadlock in the 88th minute when Firas Chaouat headed home from an Elias Saad cross. Deep into stoppage time, Mali were awarded a penalty for handball against Yassine Meriah, and Lassine Sinayoko converted to force extra time (Confederation of African Football).

Extra time brings controversy
Chaouat thought he had scored a winner early in the second period of extra time, but the goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up. With neither side able to find another breakthrough, the match headed for penalties (Confederation of African Football).

Diarra the hero in shootout
The penalty shootout swung back and forth, with both sides missing early attempts. Diarra then saved penalties from Elias Achouri and Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane to turn the contest in Mali’s favour before Touré sealed the win (Confederation of African Football).

Quarter-final challenge awaits
Mali will face defending champions Senegal in the quarter-finals in Tangier on Friday. Tunisia exit the tournament having failed to capitalise on their long spell with a man advantage, continuing a difficult run at the Africa Cup of Nations since their 2004 triumph (Confederation of African Football).
