Ganguly Backs Gill for All-Format Captaincy, Slams ‘Impatient’ System

Former India captain and batting legend Sourav Ganguly has thrown his significant weight behind young sensation Shubman Gill, unequivocally stating that the opener is talented enough to lead the national team across all three formats. Ganguly’s staunch endorsement comes with a sharp critique of the rapidly shifting public and media scrutiny surrounding young Indian leaders.

Speaking on the ‘The Captain’s Calm’ podcast, Ganguly revealed a recent exchange at Eden Gardens where he was asked about Gill’s suitability for the T20I captaincy. His response was immediate and emphatic.
”He should be captain of everything because he’s so good,” Ganguly declared, making it clear that his faith in Gill’s potential transcends formats.

A Plea for Patience

The former BCCI President contextualized his bold statement by highlighting the lack of patience in the current cricketing ecosystem. Ganguly recalled Gill’s impressive leadership stint in England just months prior, where he captained a young side—in the absence of veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma—and performed brilliantly with the bat.

”Three months ago, that fellow was in England, and he looked like gold—batting, captaincy, got a young team to fight, no Kohli, no Rohit Sharma. And in three months’ time, you’re asking questions,” Ganguly stated, expressing his frustration with the rapid flip in public opinion.

He stressed that growing into a leadership role takes time and consistent backing, not constant questioning. “You have to be patient; you have to allow somebody to become better. It’s not rocket science,” he added.

Gill’s Current Leadership Role

Shubman Gill has already taken over as India’s Test captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the longest format, and was also recently named the ODI captain. He is also the vice-captain of the T20I side, signaling the BCCI’s clear intent to groom him for the top job. Ganguly’s strong backing adds immense credibility to the view that Gill is the long-term, all-format captaincy solution Indian cricket has been searching for.

The call from ‘Dada’ serves as a reminder to fans and critics alike that the transition to a new generation of leadership demands stability and trust, arguing that Gill has already demonstrated the calibre to handle the immense responsibility.
