Verstappen’s Late-Session Surge Secures Crucial Abu Dhabi Pole

Red Bull Unlocks Speed With Bold Setup Shift
Max Verstappen turned a difficult start to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend into a defining moment by capturing pole position after Red Bull executed a decisive and well-timed setup change. Having struggled for grip and balance early in practice, the team switched to a smaller rear wing, instantly boosting straight-line speed while preserving the car’s stability through the technical middle sector. The transformation allowed Verstappen to deliver a pair of commanding laps in Q3, securing a pole that had seemed unlikely just hours earlier.

Strategic Tyre Use Gives Verstappen Two Shots At Pole
Red Bull’s qualifying plan also proved crucial. Verstappen used only a single run in Q2 on worn tyres, saving two fresh sets for the Q3 shootout. With the track rapidly improving, the strategy paid off: his first flying lap set a benchmark the field could not match, and his second effort further underlined Red Bull’s regained pace. Even without the benefit of a slipstream, Verstappen’s speed on both attempts would have been enough for pole.

Car Balance And Braking Strength Decide The Battle
The refined setup gave Verstappen a decisive advantage in key braking zones and slow-to-medium-speed corners. With improved rotation and cleaner exits, he was able to carry more momentum through the circuit’s most demanding sections. Rivals McLaren and Ferrari suffered from persistent understeer, costing them valuable time in the twisty final sector and preventing them from mounting a realistic challenge in the final minutes.

Pole Position Sets The Stage For A High-Stakes Finale
With the championship hanging in the balance, Verstappen’s pole puts him in control of the season’s final and most critical race. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri remain close enough to threaten, but Red Bull’s overnight gains suggest Verstappen will begin Sunday’s showdown with both speed and confidence on his side.
