WRU Seeks Extra Training Release

The Welsh Rugby Union will ask Cardiff, Dragons, Scarlets and Ospreys to release players for additional national-team training ahead of the 2026 Six Nations. The request comes just weeks after the WRU confirmed plans to cut one of the four regions by 2027. Wales are coming off a difficult autumn, losing three of four Tests, including a record 73-0 defeat by South Africa. New head coach Steve Tandy’s squad is due to assemble on 26 January, but the union wants more contact time before facing England on 7 February.

Clubs Balancing Busy Schedules
All four regions have United Rugby Championship and European fixtures over the next two months, making scheduling a challenge. WRU chair Richard Collier-Keywood says he has discussed the plan with Tandy and elite performance director Dave Reddin, stressing that long gaps between camps hurt continuity. Wales cannot request early release from English or French clubs, which is why 13 players were unavailable for the South Africa Test.

Tandy Builds Stronger Relationships
Despite heavy defeats to Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa, the WRU insists progress is visible under Tandy. Collier-Keywood says communication between the national setup and regions has improved since his appointment. Captain Dewi Lake reportedly told officials the recent five-week autumn camp was his “best time in a Welsh jersey.” Wales, however, face a steep climb. They have lost 21 of their last 23 Tests and are on an 11-match Six Nations losing run stretching back to March 2023.
