From Ancient Flame to Italian Alps: The Olympic Torch’s Journey to Milano–Cortina 2026

The Olympic Torch is one of sport’s most iconic symbols, linking the ancient Games of Greece to today’s global spectacle. In the Summer Olympics, the modern torch relay was first introduced at the 1936 Berlin Games, creating a traveling symbol of hope, friendship, and excellence.

For the Winter Games, the torch relay has its own unique history. The first Winter Olympic Torch Relay took place at the 1952 Oslo Games, originating in the Morgedal valley of Norway, the cradle of modern skiing. It was only since the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Olympics that the relay has started in Ancient Olympia, Greece, connecting the Winter Games to the origins of the Olympic tradition.

Every Olympic torch is a marvel of design and engineering, built to withstand wind, snow, and ice while carrying the flame across mountains, cities, and countries. Past designs, such as the Beijing 2022 torch, combined cultural artistry with modern technology—spiraling ribbons representing fire and ice, snowflake and cloud motifs, and emblems linking past Games.

The Milano–Cortina 2026 Torch:

The Milano–Cortina 2026 Torch: Tradition Meets Innovation

The Milano–Cortina 2026 Olympic Torch is a perfect fusion of classic elegance, modern technology, and sustainability. Its elongated, tapered shape gives it a timeless appearance, while the materials—an aluminium and brass alloy made from recycled sources—reflect the Games’ commitment to eco-friendly design.

A striking feature is its longitudinal opening, through which torchbearers and spectators can see the flame and the internal technological components generating it. This transparency transforms the torch into a living piece of engineering, celebrating the flame itself while symbolizing the union of tradition, innovation, and Italian craftsmanship.

Milano–Cortina 2026: A Relay Across Italy

After being lit in Ancient Olympia on 26 November 2025, the flame will travel to Rome on 4 December, officially beginning the Italian relay. Over 63 days, the torch will:

Pass through 60 cities across 110 provinces

Cover 12,000 kilometers

Celebrate Christmas in Napoli and New Year in Bari

Return to Cortina d’Ampezzo on 26 January, exactly 70 years after the 1956 Winter Olympics

Culminate at San Siro Stadium in Milan on 6 February 2026, just hours before the Opening Ceremony

The relay is more than a journey—it is a celebration of Italy’s culture, heritage, and natural beauty, touching UNESCO World Heritage sites and iconic landmarks, and connecting communities through the universal language of sport.

A Flame That Connects Generations

From the Morgedal valley in Norway to Ancient Olympia, and now across Italy’s snowy mountains and historic cities, the Olympic flame embodies continuity, inspiration, and hope. Each torchbearer, city, and spectator along the route participates in a shared journey of humanity, carrying light, dreams, and the Olympic spirit across generations.

The Milano–Cortina 2026 torch relay is not just a prelude to the Games—it is a living symbol of peace, excellence, and global unity, lighting the way for athletes and fans alike as the world counts down to the Winter Games in Italy.
