‘Blame starts with me’: Gambhir under fire after 2-0 whitewash, reminds critics of recent triumphs

Gambhir’s Test Experiment: Innovation or Indian Cricket in Crisis?

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has owned up to responsibility for India’s crushing 2–0 Test series defeat to South Africa, saying the decision on his future now lies entirely with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The comments came after India suffered a 408-run loss in Guwahati, the biggest defeat by runs in the country’s Test history.

Facing intense scrutiny, Gambhir defended his tenure and pointed to the major successes achieved earlier this year.
“It is up to the BCCI to decide my future. But I am the same guy who got you results in England and was coach for the Champions Trophy,” he said, referencing India’s title-winning campaign and the 2–2 away draw in England.

In his first public reaction since the series collapse, Gambhir stressed collective accountability.
“The blame lies with everyone and starts with me. From 95/1 to 122/7 is not acceptable. You don’t blame any individual. We all failed as a group.”

India’s Test fortunes have dipped sharply under Gambhir, losing 10 of their last 18 matches, including back-to-back whitewashes at home — first against New Zealand in 2024 and now versus South Africa.

Criticism has mounted over Gambhir’s selection strategy, particularly a push toward all-rounders at the cost of specialist batters and bowlers. But Gambhir defended his philosophy:
“You don’t need the most flamboyant and talented cricketers to play Test cricket. You need tough characters with limited skills. They build great Test teams.”

Former cricketers Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble were among those who questioned the direction of the team, blaming constant chopping and changing for the inconsistency.

With pressure peaking and calls for structural changes growing louder, all eyes now turn to the BCCI for the next move.
