England’s rising flanker Henry Pollock has been nominated for World Rugby’s Breakthrough Player of the Year after a standout first season in international rugby. The 20-year-old burst onto the scene with two tries on his England debut against Wales in March, followed by a call-up for the British and Irish Lions’ tour of Australia. Although he did not play in a Test, he continued to impress on his return to the national side.

Impactful displays off the bench
Pollock has become a valuable option for England head coach Steve Borthwick this autumn, offering energy, pace and relentless work-rate whenever introduced from the bench. His influence was clear at the start of November when he scored a crucial try against Australia, further strengthening his reputation as one of England’s most promising young forwards.

Strong competition among nominees
New Zealand lock Fabian Holland, South Africa wing Ethan Hooker and Australia’s cross-code talent Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii complete the shortlist for the breakthrough award. The category recognises players who have made a significant impact in their early international careers.

Top names in contention for main award
In the senior Player of the Year category, France winger Louis Bielle-Biarrey has been nominated after collecting the 2025 Six Nations Player of the Tournament award. The 22-year-old scored a championship-record eight tries as France clinched their 19th title. He will compete with South Africa trio Pieter-Steph du Toit, Malcolm Marx and Ox Nche, all of whom were instrumental as the Springboks secured consecutive Rugby Championship titles and maintained their position at the top of the world rankings.

Awards to be revealed this weekend
The winners of the breakthrough and senior player awards, along with the men’s international try of the year, will be announced on Saturday. Earlier this year, Canada lock Sophie de Goede won the Women’s Player of the Year prize, while England’s World Cup-winning head coach John Mitchell was named Coach of the Year.
