Davis Cup 2026 Starts With Two Setbacks for India

India began their Davis Cup 2026 Qualifiers Round 2 tie against South Korea with two singles defeats on Friday, leaving the visitors 0-2 down after the opening day in Seoul.

The tie at the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center carries significant importance, with both teams looking to reach the Davis Cup Final 8 under the current format. India entered the contest after victories over Switzerland and the Netherlands in earlier rounds.

However, both Indian singles players won their opening sets before South Korea fought back to take the two matches.

Davis Cup 2026: Suresh Loses After Strong Start

Dhakshineswar Suresh was the first Indian player in action against South Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon.

Suresh made an impressive beginning and took the opening set 6-3. His aggressive approach and deep returns allowed him to put Kwon under pressure early in the contest.

The South Korean, however, changed his approach in the second set. Kwon began serving wider and targeting Suresh’s backhand more consistently. He recovered to win the second set 6-3 before completing the comeback with a 6-4 victory in the decider.

Kwon’s 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win gave South Korea the first point of the tie.

Davis Cup 2026: Nagal Fights Back but Falls Short

India needed Sumit Nagal to level the tie in the second singles rubber against former Australian Open semifinalist Hyeon Chung.

Nagal started confidently and took the first set 6-2. Chung responded in the second, winning it 6-4 and forcing a deciding set.

The third set became a closely contested battle. Nagal fell 4-1 behind but fought back to make it 5-5, giving himself an opportunity to turn the match around.

Chung, though, held his nerve at the decisive stage. He broke Nagal in the 11th game and served out the contest to win 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The defeat left India needing victories in all three remaining rubbers to overturn the deficit.

Davis Cup 2026: Slow Court Adds to India’s Challenge

The playing conditions in Seoul also became an important part of the contest.

South Korea had prepared a slower hard court, which India’s captain Rohit Rajpal said was designed to counter the playing styles of Suresh and Nagal. The slower surface reduced the bounce and pace that can benefit India’s singles players.

Both Indians nevertheless had opportunities during their matches, but South Korea converted the key moments better on Day One.

Davis Cup 2026 Day Two Could Decide the Tie

India will begin Saturday with the doubles rubber. N Sriram Balaji and Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha are scheduled to face South Korea’s Jisung Nam and Uisung Park.

The reverse singles will then see Nagal face Kwon, followed by Suresh against Chung.

With South Korea holding a 2-0 advantage, India must win all three remaining matches to secure the tie and keep their Final 8 campaign alive.
