India Collapse for 93 as South Africa Break 15-Year Drought in Kolkata

Eden Gardens witnessed yet another unforgettable chapter in its rich cricketing history as South Africa defeated India by 30 runs, securing a rare and hard-fought Test victory on Indian soil. The Proteas, disciplined and determined, outplayed the hosts in every department to end a 15-year wait for a Test win in India.

In front of nearly 40,000 passionate home supporters, India were bundled out for 93 in a dramatic and chaotic chase of 124, undone by disciplined bowling, relentless pressure, and a pitch that tested technique and temperament in equal measure.

Jansen’s Explosive New-Ball Burst Shocks India

India, expected to chase the modest target with confidence, instead crumbled instantly under the fiery spell of left-arm quick Marco Jansen.

His double strike in the opening overs set the tone: Yashasvi Jaiswal – 0 and KL Rahul –1 and Eden Gardens fell into stunned silence.

Jansen’s pace, bounce, and angle rattled the top order, placing South Africa firmly in command from the outset.

Harmer’s Off-Spin Masterclass Breaks India’s Backbone

With the new-ball damage done, off-break bowler Simon Harmer choked India with control and craft, returning figures of 4 for 21. His spell dismantled India’s middle order, with Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, and Kuldeep Yadav all falling to Harmer’s craft and control.

Harmer’s variations gripped the dry surface, and India’s attempt to rebuild never gained traction.

Only Sundar and Axar Resist

In the midst of the collapse, Washington Sundar (31) and Axar Patel (26) showed fight and composure. Their batting was the only phase where India looked capable of pushing the game deeper.

But once both fell in quick succession, the resistance ended, and the match spiraled swiftly toward South Africa.

Shubman Gill, injured, took no further part and was marked absent hurt, effectively leaving India a batter short at the worst possible moment.

The Final Blow: Maharaj Seals It

At 93/8, Keshav Maharaj delivered the decisive strike.

A floated delivery gripped and turned; Mohammed Siraj prodded forward, edging to Aiden Markram at first slip, who stayed low and clutched the catch cleanly. The third umpire confirmed it, but South Africa had already begun celebrating.

Maharaj sprinted across the outfield, teammates roaring behind him — the moment of a 15-year wait finally ending.

A Test That Lasted Just Over 3.5 Days, But Had Everything

Eden Gardens, the ground where South Africa were welcomed back to international cricket in 1991, witnessed them writing history again in 2025.

A Test filled with intensity, drama, turn, bounce, and momentum swings delivered a memorable spectacle — and a result that will be talked about for a long, long time.

South Africa, disciplined and fearless, walked away with one of their greatest victories on Indian soil.
