Wayne Rooney believes Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has been “probably the signing of the season,” praising the midfielder’s leadership and influence in the club’s impressive Premier League return.

Xhaka drives Sunderland’s dream start
Back in the top flight after promotion, Sunderland have stunned many by sitting fourth after 11 matches, collecting 19 points — a tally that already brings them closer to securing safety. Much of that success, Rooney says, comes down to Xhaka’s composure and consistency.

The 33-year-old Swiss international has played every minute so far, contributing one goal and three assists while dictating play from midfield. He also tops the club charts for assists, chances created, touches, successful passes, duels won, and distance covered.

From Leverkusen to leadership in red and white
Signed for an initial £13 million from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, Xhaka was one of several additions aimed at adding top-flight experience to Sunderland’s youthful squad. His influence, both on and off the pitch, has been immediate.

Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show: “Coming back to the Premier League, you wonder if he can still do it — especially with a newly promoted side. But he’s probably been the signing of the season. He’s been brilliant.”

Redemption after Arsenal turbulence
Xhaka’s story has been one of resilience. During his seven-year stay at Arsenal, he made 297 appearances and won two FA Cups — but also endured tough moments. He was sent off five times, clashed with supporters, and was stripped of the captaincy in 2019 after a public fallout.

However, under Mikel Arteta, he rebuilt his reputation and became an important figure before moving to Germany, where he helped Leverkusen clinch their first-ever Bundesliga title in his debut season.

A mentor for Sunderland’s young core
Rooney believes that same maturity has made Xhaka the perfect leader for a developing team. “He’s like a father figure for their young squad,” he said. “He’ll be a huge help for the coach as well — that bridge between players and management. Sunderland made a lot of signings, and his experience ties everything together.”

Calm, commanding, and crucial
As Sunderland continue to defy expectations, Xhaka’s steady performances are proving invaluable. From a player once jeered at Arsenal to a respected captain in the North East, his journey has come full circle — and his impact may just carry Sunderland to their best season in decades.
