Coach on a Mission: Sandy Brondello Ready to Write Toronto’s WNBA Story

In a landmark moment for Canadian basketball, the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA’s first-ever franchise based in Canada, have appointed Sandy Brondello as their inaugural head coach. The move signals both ambition and intent as the Tempo prepare to make their league debut in 2026.

🇨🇦 A New Chapter for the WNBA and Canada

The announcement cements Toronto’s position as the newest frontier for women’s professional basketball. With the WNBA expanding north of the border for the first time, the league gains not just a new team but an entire nation of fans eager to rally behind the Tempo.

Team executives described the hiring of Brondello as a “statement appointment,” ensuring that from day one, Toronto will have championship-level experience guiding its bench.

🏆 A Proven Winner at Every Level

Sandy Brondello, 55, brings a remarkable résumé. The Australian basketball legend has spent decades shaping the sport—as both a standout player and a world-class coach.

As a player: Represented Australia in four Olympic Games, winning silver in 2000.

As a coach: Led the Phoenix Mercury to a WNBA title in 2014, earning Coach of the Year honors.

Most recently: Guided the New York Liberty to their first-ever championship in 2024, finishing her tenure with a stellar 107–53 record—the best in Liberty history.

Her appointment makes her one of the few coaches to have led multiple WNBA franchises to the Finals.

“It’s an incredible honor to be part of something historic,” Brondello said in a statement. “Toronto is a world-class city with world-class fans, and I can’t wait to help build a winning culture here.”

🚀 Building a Franchise from the Ground Up

The Tempo will begin play in the 2026 WNBA season, and Brondello’s early appointment gives her crucial time to help shape the roster.

She’ll play a key role in Overseeing the expansion draft and college draft selection, Recruiting top-tier free agents, Establishing the team’s competitive identity

Toronto’s ownership group has emphasized a vision of blending elite performance with community engagement—something Brondello’s leadership style naturally aligns with.

“We wanted a leader who understands both excellence and empathy,” said Tempo General Manager Theresa Thompson. “Sandy brings championship experience, global perspective, and a deep understanding of how to build from scratch.”

🔥 A Perfect Fit for Toronto

Brondello’s hiring resonates with Toronto’s multicultural spirit. As an Australian who’s succeeded in both U.S. and international basketball circuits, she embodies the Tempo’s global appeal.

Local fans have already responded with enthusiasm online: “With Brondello in charge, players will want to come to Toronto,” wrote one supporter on social media. “She knows how to win and how to connect with her team.”

The team’s branding—“Tempo”—symbolizes rhythm, movement, and unity, ideals that mirror Brondello’s coaching philosophy.

🧩 Challenges Ahead

The road ahead won’t be without challenges.

The WNBA’s upcoming collective bargaining agreement could reshape roster rules and salaries.

Building chemistry in a first-year roster is always tricky.

The Tempo must establish a fan base in a market already rich with major sports teams.

Yet, with Brondello’s steady hand, Toronto appears well-equipped to overcome those hurdles.

A Symbol Beyond the Court

The hiring of Sandy Brondello is about more than just basketball—it’s about representation and growth. Canada’s entry into the WNBA signals the league’s expansion into new markets, and Brondello’s presence ensures the team will launch with credibility and ambition.

“This isn’t just about building a team,” Brondello added. “It’s about inspiring the next generation of players—here in Toronto, across Canada, and beyond.”

What’s Next

Team Identity Launch: The Tempo will unveil official jerseys and colors later this year.

Expansion Draft: Expected in early 2026.

First Season: Tip-off in May 2026 at Coca-Cola Coliseum, Toronto.

📰 In Summary

The Toronto Tempo have made their first major move—and it’s a powerful one. In choosing Sandy Brondello, the franchise gains not only a seasoned strategist but a proven winner who embodies everything a new WNBA team should aspire to be: bold, competitive, and inspiring.

With Brondello at the helm, the Tempo are already setting the pace.
