In a landmark move celebrating women’s cricket, the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) has announced that two stands at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam will be named after former India captain Mithali Raj and wicketkeeper-batter Ravi Kalpana. The dedication ceremony is set to take place on October 12, coinciding with India’s Women’s World Cup match against Australia.

A Historic Recognition For Women’s Cricket

The decision marks a significant step towards honouring the contributions of women cricketers in India. The initiative reportedly stemmed from a suggestion by Indian opener Smriti Mandhana, who had earlier expressed disappointment that no cricket stadium in India featured stands named after female players.
Her proposal, made during the “Breaking the Boundaries” event alongside Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh, prompted the state government and ACA to act swiftly, turning her idea into a reality.

Mithali Raj: The Face Of Indian Women’s Cricket

Mithali Raj, regarded as one of the greatest women cricketers in history, retired from international cricket in 2022 after an illustrious 23-year career. She remains the highest run-scorer in Women’s ODIs, with 7,805 runs in 232 matches at an average of 50.68.
Raj also accumulated 2,364 runs in T20Is and 699 runs in Tests, including a record-breaking 214 — the highest individual score by an Indian woman in Tests.
Speaking about the honour, Raj said, “It’s heartwarming to see women’s cricket being celebrated in such a lasting way. I hope this inspires more girls to take up the sport.”

Ravi Kalpana: Pride Of Andhra Pradesh

Ravi Kalpana, who represented India in seven ODIs between 2015 and 2016, hails from Andhra Pradesh and has been a role model for young cricketers in the region. Despite her brief international career, she continues to play domestic cricket and contribute to the growth of the sport in her home state.
Her journey from humble beginnings to representing India has often been cited as a powerful story of perseverance and local inspiration.

A Symbol Of Equality And Inspiration

The ACA, in its statement, said the move reflects its “commitment to celebrating the achievements of women who have redefined Indian cricket.” Minister Lokesh also lauded the step, adding that it aligns with the government’s broader vision of “empowering women through recognition and opportunity.”
Cricket fans and former players across India have welcomed the announcement, calling it a “progressive and overdue tribute.”

Unveiling On A Global Stage

The stands named after Mithali Raj and Ravi Kalpana will be inaugurated on October 12, just before the high-profile Women’s World Cup clash between India and Australia. The ceremony is expected to draw prominent figures from the cricketing world and government, highlighting India’s growing emphasis on gender parity in sports.

This tribute ensures that future generations of fans at the Vizag stadium will not only witness great cricket but also remember the women who helped shape its history.
