Cooling Controversy: Verstappen Blasts ‘Ridiculous’ F1 Cooling Vest Plan Amid Singapore Heat Hazard

As Formula 1 introduces a new driver-cooling rule in response to extreme heat, Max Verstappen calls the proposed mandatory vest “ridiculous” — sparking debate over comfort, safety, and driver freedom

Cooling Controversy: Verstappen Blasts ‘Ridiculous’ F1 Cooling Vest Plan Amid Singapore Heat Hazard

Max Verstappen during qualifying at the Singapore Grand Prix — the Red Bull driver has rejected F1’s new cooling vest, calling plans to make it mandatory “ridiculous.”

The Singapore Grand Prix has made Formula 1 history as the first race declared a ‘heat hazard’ event. Under this new FIA rule, if temperatures are forecast to exceed 31°C, all teams must install a Driver Cooling System — a response to the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, when several drivers suffered from heat exhaustion.

This system circulates chilled fluid through a special vest worn under the race suit, designed to lower body temperature. For now, wearing the vest remains optional, but the FIA is considering making it mandatory by 2026.

Verstappen: “It Should Be My Choice”

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who qualified second for the Singapore GP, is refusing to wear the vest — and he’s not mincing words about it.

“I don’t really suffer from the heat that much,” Verstappen said. “After 15–20 minutes the vest gets hot and makes it worse. It doesn’t help at all.”

His main objection, however, is philosophical: that the FIA shouldn’t dictate what drivers wear inside their cockpits. “It’s a bit ridiculous,” he added. “This should be a personal choice, not something forced.”

Divided Paddock Opinions

Not all drivers agree with Verstappen. Mercedes’ George Russell, who also serves as a Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) director, says the vest has helped him in past races such as Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. “It’s not perfect, but it helps when cockpit temperatures hit 60°C,” he said.

Meanwhile, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri remains undecided, noting that “if the vest fails, it can make things worse.” Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has already tested the system but admits it’s not comfortable for long stints.

What’s Next for the Cooling Vest

The FIA insists no final decision has been made on making the vest mandatory. Officials say they will continue consulting with drivers before confirming 2026 regulations.

For now, Verstappen’s criticism has reignited a familiar F1 debate — where safety innovation meets driver autonomy. As the Singapore humidity rises above 70%, the argument over who decides how to beat the heat may be just as intense as the race itself.
