Beijing — Italian star Jannik Sinner secured his third consecutive trip to the China Open semifinals on Monday, defeating Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in straight sets. The world No. 2 showcased a mix of easy dominance and clutch play to win 6-1, 7-5 in one hour and 19 minutes.

Sinner, 24, will next face third seed Alex de Minaur in the semifinal. Despite the Australian being his next opponent, Sinner was quick to dismiss his past dominance over De Minaur: “Generally I’m very happy with today’s performance… Every match is different. Let’s see what’s coming,” he said in the post-match presentation, referencing his impressive 10-0 head-to-head record against the Australian.

Match Breakdown: Sinner Closes Out a Second-Set Scare

Sinner controlled the opening set with ease, winning 6-1. However, the world No. 57 Marozsan put up a spirited fight in the second set, even managing to break Sinner to take a 5-4 lead.

This scare immediately spurred Sinner into action. The Italian elevated his game, winning the next three games decisively while dropping only a single point to power into the last four.

Women’s Draw: Swiatek Advances as Opponent Retires

In the women’s singles draw, top seed Iga Swiatek of Poland advanced to the last 16 after her opponent, Camila Osorio of Colombia, retired hurt. Swiatek was leading 6-0 in the first set when Osorio called it quits. Swiatek’s next opponent will be American Emma Navarro.

Elsewhere, Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine and Mirra Andreeva of Russia both secured their spots in the last 16, inching closer to a potential semifinal clash:

  • Fourth seed Mirra Andreeva defeated Spain’s Jessica Bouzas 6-4, 6-1.
  • Marta Kostyuk overcame Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus 6-4, 6-2.
