Bhubaneswar: Simarjeet Singh, the Delhi pacer who once got his “lucky break” with India A during the COVID-19 era, is still searching for that elusive rhythm which can keep him in the selectors’ radar. In a candid chat with ESPNcricinfo, the 26-year-old admitted, “I’m still trying to stay fit, still trying to find that consistency.”
Once considered a rising quick for India, Simarjeet’s journey has often been interrupted by fitness setbacks. His stint with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL gave him a glimpse of the big stage, but repeated injuries meant limited opportunities. Now with Sunrisers Hyderabad, he hopes to revive his white-ball form.
Interestingly, his India A call-up in 2021 had come under unusual circumstances — when Prasidhbaneswar Krishna and Arzan Nagwaswalla were ruled out, Simarjeet was fast-tracked into the squad. While that opened doors, he couldn’t cement a permanent spot.
With India A’s one-dayers against Australia A around the corner, Simarjeet knows the window is still open. But in a pace pool brimming with names like Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, and Umran Malik, his biggest challenge remains simple yet tough: staying fit long enough to deliver consistently.
