Motegi, Japan – The stage is set for a thrilling weekend at the Japan MotoGP as championship leader Marc Marquez qualified third on the grid, ceding pole position to reigning race winner Francesco Bagnaia. The qualifying session, held on Saturday at the Motegi circuit, was defined by a new track record and high drama as the title race intensified.

Bagnaia, who claimed both the sprint and the grand prix at Motegi last year, topped the timesheets with a new track-record time of 1min 42.911sec on his Ducati.

Title Stakes and Key Qualifying Battles

Marc Marquez is on the verge of securing his seventh world championship crown, needing only to finish the Motegi weekend with three more points than his closest rival and brother, Alex Marquez.

  • The Top Three: Bagnaia took pole, followed closely by Honda’s Joan Mir (0.092sec behind). Marc Marquez, on a fellow Ducati, secured the final spot on the front row, just 0.132sec off Bagnaia’s blistering time.
  • Marquez’s Drama: The championship leader admitted to a confidence wobble after a small crash during Saturday morning’s free practice. He told reporters: “Nobody said that it would be easy. I feel better and better. It’s true that I had a small crash. It affected a bit the confidence, but then in qualifying I felt comfortable with the bike.”
  • Rival’s Struggle: Title rival Alex Marquez had a tough session, forced into the first qualifying session for the first time this season, and will start from the third row in eighth place.

Marquez is hunting his first world title since 2019 and is enjoying a commanding season, having already set a single-season points record with 512 championship points and 11 Grand Prix wins.

Bagnaia’s Return to Form

Two-time world champion Bagnaia, who has struggled in the overall standings this season (currently third), rolled back the years with his record-breaking lap, snatching pole position from Mir late in the session.

Other notable qualifiers included Pedro Acosta in fourth, despite missing 10 minutes of the session due to a technical issue with his KTM, and Fabio Quartararo in fifth.
