Can the Vikings’ Freight Train Keep Rolling Against the Steel Curtain?

Dublin – The NFL is heading overseas to Dublin, Ireland, this week for a fascinating cross-conference matchup as the Pittsburgh Steelers clash with the red-hot Minnesota Vikings. This Week 4 game at Croke Park pits a gritty, defensive-minded contender against a team that just delivered a statement victory, with major implications for both teams’ season narratives.

Know the Game: Key Matchup Dynamics

The Vikings are riding the high of an absolute demolition of the Bengals, winning 48-10. This was more than just a win; it was a comprehensive statement blowout, driven by a defensive masterclass from Isaiah Rodgers and a smooth offensive performance. Minnesota looks like a Super Bowl contender right now, but a giant asterisk looms: the status of their young quarterback.

The Steelers, meanwhile, did what they always do: grind out a victory. They beat the Patriots 21-14, leaning on two constants: Aaron Rodgers making history (passing Brett Favre for fourth all-time in career touchdowns with No. 510) and the relentless defense, led by T.J. Watt, ensuring the opponent never gets comfortable.

The Quarterback Question Mark

The biggest intrigue for Minnesota centers on their signal-caller. With rookie J.J. McCarthy likely sidelined again, veteran Carson Wentz has stepped in and been sharp, completing 70% of his passes for 173 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions in the Week 3 rout.

The Vikings’ Dilemma: Can a team truly cash in on their talent and sustain a Super Bowl run without a definitive, healthy QB1? For all their firepower—and the return of wide receiver Jordan Addison this week—a shaky quarterback situation is the kind of weakness January football ruthlessly exposes. Wentz’s play this week against the Steelers’ fierce defense will be telling.

The Steelers’ Sputtering Engine

For Pittsburgh, the question is simple: Can the offense finally find a rhythm?

  • Passing Game: Aaron Rodgers is facing a sticky Vikings defense while dealing with an anemic rushing attack.
  • Rushing Woes: The Steelers are struggling mightily on the ground, averaging just 63 rushing yards per game at a dismal 2.8 yards per carry. This poor production compounds the pressure on Rodgers.
  • The Playmaker: Jaylen Warren is the lone bright spot, leading the team in carries, rushing yards, receptions, and receiving yards. He remains the focal point of their offense.
  • The Defense: The “Steel Curtain” remains formidable. Patrick Queen leads the team in tackles, while T.J. Watt has two sacks and Nick Herbig has an interception. Their ability to wreck games is Pittsburgh’s only consistent path to victory.

Injuries and Returners

  • Vikings: Their biggest issue is health. Key pieces have already gone to injured reserve, and several players, including quarterback J.J. McCarthy and defensive tackle Davon Hargrave, are listed as questionable. However, the returns of left tackle Christian Darrisaw and center Ryan Kelly will provide a major boost to the offensive line.
  • Steelers: They also face injury concerns, most notably with linebacker Alex Highsmith ruled out and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. listed as questionable. Guard Max Scharping is also out.

Fantasy Football Watch

  • Carson Wentz (MIN): A solid QB streamer (projected 14.7 points) who has been efficient in his starts. If he keeps winning, he could hold the job long-term.
  • Jordan Mason (MIN): A must-start running back (projected 14.3 points) who exploded for 116 yards and two scores last week. He’s locked in as the lead back with Aaron Jones Sr. sidelined.
  • Jaylen Warren (PIT): The centerpiece of the Steelers’ attack (projected 11.1 points), handling a majority of the touches. His versatile workload gives him a safe floor despite the team’s struggles.
