India Open Asian Games Shooting With Silver
India opened their shooting campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with a silver medal in the women鈥檚 10m air rifle team event here on Sunday.
Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod combined for 1898.0 points to finish second behind China, who set a world record with a score of 1904.2.
Hosts Japan took the bronze medal with 1897.1 points.
The silver marked India鈥檚 first confirmed medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
China Set World Record
China produced a world-record performance to claim the gold, while India finished just 6.2 points behind the champions.
Sonam was India鈥檚 highest scorer with 634.1 points, followed by Elavenil on 633.5 and Vidarsa on 630.4.
The result gives India an encouraging start to its shooting campaign after the country鈥檚 shooters produced a record 22-medal haul at the Hangzhou Asian Games, including seven gold, nine silver and six bronze.
Elavenil, Sonam Eye Individual Glory
India鈥檚 campaign could bring another medal later in the day, with Elavenil and Sonam both qualifying for the women鈥檚 10m air rifle individual final.
Their scores placed them among the eight finalists, setting up another opportunity for India in the event.
Elavenil and Sonam will now look to convert their strong qualifying performances into individual medals in the eight-woman final.
Earlier, MMA fighter Suchika Tariyal became the first Indian athlete to assure a medal at the Games by reaching the semifinals of the women鈥檚 Traditional MMA 60kg event.
India will hope the shooting silver proves the beginning of another successful campaign after their record performance in Hangzhou.
