Sidney Crosby Rolls Back the Years as Canada Storm Past Denmark at IIHF World Championship

Sidney Crosby Rolls Back the Years as Canada Storm Past Denmark at IIHF World Championship

Sidney Crosby delivered another reminder of why he remains one of hockey’s greatest leaders, orchestrating Canada’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Denmark with a vintage four-assist performance at the 2026 IIHF World Championship.

For two periods in Fribourg, Denmark frustrated the tournament favourites with disciplined defending and fearless energy. Canada controlled possession for long stretches but struggled to fully break open the game as the Danish side battled relentlessly to stay alive in the contest.

But once the third period began, the match completely changed.

Canada unleashed a devastating attacking surge, scoring five unanswered goals to overpower Denmark and continue their perfect run in the tournament. At the centre of nearly every dangerous move was Crosby, whose passing, vision and calm decision-making dismantled the Danish defence.

Even at 38, Crosby looked in complete command of the game’s tempo. He repeatedly found teammates in scoring positions with inch-perfect passes and showed the kind of composure that has defined his extraordinary international career for nearly two decades.

Porter Martone emerged as one of the standout performers alongside the veteran captain, contributing a goal and an assist as Canada’s attack finally burst into life during the closing stages. Parker Wotherspoon also got on the scoresheet, adding further depth to Canada’s dominant offensive display.

The result extended Canada’s unbeaten start and strengthened their position among the favourites to capture the world title. More importantly, it showed the balance within the squad — a mix of elite experience and emerging young talent capable of taking over games quickly once momentum shifts.

What impressed coaches most was Canada’s patience. Rather than forcing risky plays while Denmark defended tightly, the Canadians stayed composed and trusted their structure. Once openings appeared in the final period, the game quickly tilted out of Denmark’s control.

For Crosby, the performance added another memorable chapter to an already legendary international résumé. The Pittsburgh Penguins icon has won Olympic gold medals, Stanley Cups and World Championship titles, while also becoming a member of hockey’s prestigious Triple Gold Club.

Yet despite achieving almost everything possible in the sport, Crosby continues to play with extraordinary hunger whenever he wears the Canadian jersey. His commitment to international hockey has remained unwavering, even late in his career.

Fans inside the arena responded loudly every time the veteran forward touched the puck. Chants echoed around the stadium as Crosby dictated play with the confidence and intelligence that have made him one of the defining players of his generation.

Denmark, meanwhile, earned respect despite the heavy defeat. The European side competed strongly for much of the contest and showed impressive discipline before Canada’s superior depth and attacking firepower eventually proved too much to contain.

The victory now gives Canada growing momentum as the tournament enters a crucial stage. With Crosby leading from the front and younger players thriving around him, belief inside the squad continues to rise.

And if performances like this continue, Canada’s pursuit of another world title may become increasingly difficult for anyone to stop.
