British gymnastics star Jake Jarman has announced that he will not be available for selection for the 2026 European Championships or the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, opting instead to concentrate on his preparations for this year’s World Championships.
The decision, revealed through his social media channels, marks a strategic shift in Jarman’s competition calendar. Rather than taking part in back-to-back major events during the summer, the 24-year-old believes dedicating his time to training and refining new routines will give him the best opportunity to perform at his highest level later this season.
Jarman Chooses Long-Term Goal Over Busy Summer
Jarman explained that stepping away from selection was a carefully considered decision and stressed that he remains fully committed to representing Great Britain in the future. He also wished the selected British gymnasts the very best for both the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games.
His absence means Great Britain will compete without one of its most decorated artistic gymnasts, but the move is aimed at ensuring he reaches peak form for the World Championships, where medals and qualification points carry significant importance.
One of Britain’s Biggest Gymnastics Stars
Jarman has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the past few years, establishing himself as one of the world’s leading men’s artistic gymnasts.
Some of his biggest achievements include:
Olympic bronze medallist in the men’s floor exercise at Paris 2024.
2023 World Champion on vault.
2025 World Champion on floor exercise.
Four-time European champion.
First English male gymnast to win four gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games, achieving the feat at Birmingham 2022.
His historic Commonwealth Games campaign included gold medals in:
Men’s Team Event
Individual All-Around
Floor Exercise
Vault
Those performances made him one of England’s standout athletes and cemented his place among the country’s gymnastics elite.
Focus Turns to the World Championships
Instead of competing throughout the summer, Jarman will dedicate the coming months to training and upgrading his routines ahead of the World Championships. The additional preparation time is expected to help him increase the difficulty of his performances while ensuring he arrives fully fit for the season’s biggest competition.
His decision also reflects the growing trend among elite athletes to carefully manage their competition schedules in Olympic cycles, choosing quality preparation over a packed calendar.
A Big Opportunity for Britain’s Next Generation
While Jarman’s withdrawal is undoubtedly a setback for Team GB’s medal ambitions at both the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games, it also opens the door for other British gymnasts to step into the spotlight.
With one of the team’s biggest names focusing on the World Championships, younger athletes will now have an opportunity to gain valuable international experience and prove themselves on the senior stage.
Although fans will miss seeing Jarman compete this summer, British gymnastics supporters will now eagerly await his return when he targets more global success later in the year.
