Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter boosted British hopes at the Queen’s Club Championships by advancing to the quarter-finals with commanding victories on Friday.
The pair will now face the challenge of playing twice in one day after persistent rain wiped out Thursday’s action, forcing all four quarter-final matches to be scheduled on Friday.
Raducanu produced one of her best performances of the season to defeat Romanian world number 18 Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-2, while Boulter cruised past Jaqueline Cristian 6-1, 6-3.
Raducanu Ends Top-20 Drought
Raducanu’s victory over Cirstea marked her first win against a top-20 opponent in more than a year and provided sweet revenge after her heavy defeat to the Romanian in the Transylvania Open final earlier this season.
The 23-year-old looked confident throughout the contest, controlling rallies and taking advantage of key opportunities to secure a straight-sets victory.
The win also marked the first time since February that Raducanu has won back-to-back matches in a tournament, offering another positive sign ahead of the grass-court season’s biggest events.
She will now face Kamilla Rakhimova in the quarter-finals after the Uzbek player battled past Britain’s Harriet Dart 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 in a marathon encounter lasting nearly three hours.
Boulter Continues Strong Run
British number one Katie Boulter delivered another assured display as she dismissed world number 38 Jaqueline Cristian in just 67 minutes.
Boulter dominated from the opening game, using her powerful serve and aggressive baseline game to keep her opponent under constant pressure.
The victory sends the 29-year-old into a tough quarter-final clash against top seed Elena Rybakina.
Rybakina Survives Major Scare
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina was forced to work hard for her place in the last eight.
The Kazakhstani star recovered from losing the opening set to defending champion Tatjana Maria before completing a 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-0 victory.
After a closely fought first two sets, Rybakina dominated the decider to seal her place in the quarter-finals and maintain her title challenge.
Rain Creates Busy Friday Schedule
Tournament organisers were forced to reshuffle the schedule after rain prevented any play on Thursday.
As a result, all quarter-final matches will take place on Friday, meaning players face a demanding day as they compete for places in the semi-finals.
With Raducanu and Boulter both still in contention, British fans will be hoping the home favourites can continue their impressive runs and move one step closer to the title at Queen’s Club.
