Emma Raducanu’s preparations for Wimbledon 2026 have come to a heartbreaking end after the British No. 1 was forced to withdraw from the Championships because of a stress fracture in her lower leg. The injury, confirmed following medical examinations, has ruled the former US Open champion out of her home Grand Slam just days before her scheduled first-round match.

The 23-year-old had been dealing with discomfort throughout the grass-court season, but the issue worsened during her final training sessions. Further scans revealed a stress fracture, leaving doctors with no option but to advise her against competing at the All England Club.

Injury Ends Home Grand Slam Dream

Raducanu was due to face Croatia’s Antonia Ružić in the opening round, but her withdrawal means a lucky loser from the qualifying event will now take her place in the main draw.

Playing at Wimbledon has always been one of the highlights of Raducanu’s season, making the withdrawal even more disappointing. Despite making every effort to recover in time, she was unable to train at full intensity because of persistent pain, ultimately prioritizing her long-term fitness over competing while injured.

Another Setback in an Injury-Hit Career

Since capturing the 2021 US Open title as a teenage qualifier, Raducanu has repeatedly battled fitness issues that have interrupted her progress on the WTA Tour. This latest setback adds another chapter to an unfortunate run of injuries that have limited her appearances at some of the sport’s biggest tournaments.

Her absence also comes as a major blow for British tennis, with home fans hoping to see their highest-ranked women’s player make a deep run at Wimbledon.

What It Means for Wimbledon

Raducanu’s withdrawal reshapes the women’s singles draw and removes one of the tournament’s biggest local attractions. With the British star sidelined, attention will now turn to the remaining home players as Wimbledon gets underway.

The focus for Raducanu will shift towards recovery and rehabilitation, with the aim of returning fully fit for the remainder of the 2026 season.

Key Facts

Tournament: Wimbledon 2026

Player: Emma Raducanu (Great Britain)

Age: 23

Reason for withdrawal: Stress fracture in the lower leg

Scheduled first-round opponent: Antonia Ružić (Croatia)

Replacement: Lucky loser from the qualifying tournament

Looking Ahead

Although missing Wimbledon is a significant disappointment for both Raducanu and British tennis supporters, the priority will now be ensuring a complete recovery. At just 23 years of age, the former Grand Slam champion still has plenty of opportunities ahead, and a successful rehabilitation could pave the way for a stronger return later this season.
