The 2026 Hungarian MotoGP at Balaton Park was thrown into chaos within seconds of the race start after Jorge Martin was involved in a major Turn 1 accident that eliminated several riders, including Aprilia teammate and championship leader Marco Bezzecchi.

Starting from eighth on the grid, Martin lost control of his Aprilia under heavy braking heading into the opening corner. His bike collided with Bezzecchi, triggering a chain reaction that also brought down Raul Fernandez, Fermin Aldeguer and Fabio Di Giannantonio. While Di Giannantonio managed to continue, the others saw their races end almost immediately.

Following an investigation, MotoGP stewards ruled Martin responsible for the incident and handed the Spaniard a double Long Lap Penalty, which he will have to serve at the next round in Brno. The punishment remains active until his next race appearance if he misses the Czech Grand Prix.

The crash was a particularly painful blow for Bezzecchi, who arrived in Hungary leading the MotoGP championship standings and hoping to extend his advantage in the title race. Instead, the Italian was forced to retire without scoring points after being caught in the opening-corner melee.

Medical examinations provided some relief for Aprilia, with both Martin and Bezzecchi avoiding fractures despite suffering significant bruising. Bezzecchi was reported to have injuries to his right leg and hand, while Martin escaped with bruises to his back and right foot.

The dramatic incident became one of the defining moments of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, overshadowing much of the early race action. For Martin, the penalty adds another obstacle in his championship challenge, while Bezzecchi will be left wondering what might have been after losing a valuable opportunity to strengthen his position at the top of the standings.

With tensions rising and the title battle entering a crucial phase, all eyes will now be on Brno, where Martin must serve his double Long Lap Penalty and attempt to recover from one of the costliest mistakes of his 2026 season.
