Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39 after failing to recover from a serious shoulder injury.
The veteran goalkeeper, who recently completed his second season with Celtic FC, had been sidelined since February and confirmed that specialist medical advice ended hopes of a comeback.
Injury forced retirement decision
Schmeichel initially suffered the injury during UEFA Nations League action for Denmark against Portugal in March 2025.
He later aggravated the problem during Celtic’s Europa League defeat to VfB Stuttgart.
Despite considering a lengthy rehabilitation process, Schmeichel said surgeons informed him he should not expect to return to top-flight football.
The Danish goalkeeper described retirement as “a decision that has been made” for him.
Decorated career comes to an end
Schmeichel retires after an accomplished career spanning more than two decades. He won the Premier League title with Leicester City during their historic 2015-16 campaign and later lifted the FA Cup in 2021.
He also enjoyed spells with Manchester City, OGC Nice and RSC Anderlecht before joining Celtic.
At international level, Schmeichel earned 120 caps for Denmark and represented his country at two FIFA World Cups and Euro 2020, where Denmark reached the semi-finals.
Emotional farewell
The son of legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel admitted he would have preferred to end his career on the pitch but expressed gratitude for everything football had given him.
Schmeichel said the friendships and experiences throughout his career would remain the most important memories from his journey in the game.
