Jonas Vingegaard moved a major step closer to winning his first Giro d’Italia title after producing another dominant ride in Stage 16 of the 2026 edition. The Danish cyclist attacked brilliantly on the final climb to Cari, leaving his rivals struggling behind as he extended his overall lead in the General Classification standings.
The 113km mountain stage from Bellinzona to Cari turned into a showcase of Vingegaard’s climbing strength. Riding for Visma-Lease a Bike, the two-time Tour de France champion made his decisive move inside the final seven kilometres and crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of the chasing group.
Austria’s Felix Gall finished second on the stage and moved up in the overall standings, while Australia’s Jai Hindley claimed third place after a hard-fought effort in the mountains.
Vingegaard’s Giro dominance continues
With four stage wins already in his Giro debut, Vingegaard has emerged as the strongest rider of the race. His team once again controlled the peloton throughout the stage before setting up their leader perfectly for the final attack.
The Dane now holds a significant advantage in the pink jersey race and looks firmly on course to complete another Grand Tour triumph after his earlier successes at the Tour de France and Vuelta a España.
Safety concerns spark heated debate
While the racing grabbed headlines, controversy also surrounded the Giro after riders raised concerns about safety during Stage 15 in Milan. Several leading cyclists, including Vingegaard, reportedly objected to dangerous road conditions on the city circuit, pointing to tram tracks, slippery corners and roadside obstacles.
The protests eventually led organisers to neutralise general classification timings for the final lap, a decision that triggered criticism from race officials. Giro organisers later claimed the riders had overreacted and insisted the route had been inspected thoroughly before the stage.
The disagreement created visible tension between the peloton and organisers, once again highlighting the growing debate around rider safety in professional cycling.
