India’s national record holder Praveen Chithravel produced a timely performance at the National Senior Athletics Federation competition in Ranchi, registering a strong 17.08m leap in the men’s triple jump final and crossing the prestigious 17m-mark once again.
The Tamil Nadu athlete achieved the mark in his second attempt at the Birsa Munda Football Stadium, delivering one of his best performances of the season. The jump also helped him clear the qualification standard for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Coming into the event, Chithravel’s best effort this year was 16.95m at the Indian Open Athletics meet in Chennai earlier this month. His latest jump marked a significant improvement and showed signs of returning to top form ahead of a crucial athletics calendar.
The 23-year-old has been aiming to consistently cross the 17m barrier after setting the national record previously. His coach, former world medallist Yoandri Betanzos, had expressed confidence before the final and believed the athlete was physically prepared to target bigger distances this season.
Despite the achievement, Chithravel’s focus now shifts towards bigger international goals. After narrowly missing a podium finish at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the Indian jumper is determined to challenge for a medal in Glasgow and also improve his standing at the upcoming Asian Games cycle.
With Indian athletics witnessing a steady rise in field events, Chithravel’s return to the 17m club could be a major boost for the country’s medal hopes in global competitions.
