ROME — Casper Ruud produced a commanding performance to dismantle Italy’s Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals of the 2026 Italian Open at the Foro Italico on Friday, booking his place in the prestigious ATP Masters 1000 tournament final for the first time in his career.

The Norwegian, known for his prowess on clay, wasted little time in imposing his experience on the young Italian. Ruud broke early in both sets and never looked in danger, finishing the match in straight sets despite a lengthy rain delay that briefly interrupted play.
Ruud’s semi-final statistics underline his authority: he dropped only two games in total, winning 12 of 14 service games and converting break points ruthlessly. After rain postponed the match with Ruud up 4-1 in the opening set, he quickly wrapped up the remainder on the resumption.
“It feels great,” Ruud said on court. “I was able to use my experience today. Luciano has had an incredible week, especially here at home, and I’m sorry for him playing in front of his crowd. But I had the focus and rhythm to close it out.”
Experience Wins Out
The 23rd-seeded Ruud entered the final having dropped only one set all week and will return to the ATP top 20 rankings following his run in Rome. He has previously reached Grand Slam finals on clay at Roland Garros but has yet to secure a Masters 1000 title, making this appearance a milestone in his career.
Darderi, ranked 20th and playing in his first Masters 1000 semifinal, had upset higher-ranked opponents earlier in the week, including Alexander Zverev, but could not maintain that momentum against a more seasoned Ruud.
Title Clash Awaits
Ruud’s reward is a title match against World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who overcame Daniil Medvedev in a rain-delayed semifinal. Sinner’s 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory set up an all-clay final clash on Sunday, with Sinner seeking to continue his record run of Masters titles.
With the French Open on the horizon, both finalists will be eyeing momentum and confidence on clay ahead of Roland Garros.
