The Gulf Giants have turned to one of T20 cricket’s most experienced minds, appointing Australian coach Simon Helmot as their new head coach for the upcoming International League T20 (ILT20) season.
The franchise, owned by Adani Sportsline, confirmed the appointment on Friday as preparations begin for the next edition of the UAE-based tournament.
A Proven Name In Franchise Cricket
Helmot arrives with more than two decades of coaching experience across domestic and franchise cricket around the world. Over the years, he has worked in several leading T20 leagues and built a strong reputation for creating competitive, high-pressure teams.
The veteran Australian has also been associated with the Hyderabad franchise in the Indian Premier League since 2013 and has contributed to multiple title-winning campaigns in Australia, the Caribbean and the UAE.
One of his recent achievements came with the Melbourne Renegades women’s side, whom he guided to their maiden Women’s Big Bash League title in 2024 before stepping down earlier this year.
Gulf Giants Eye Fresh Start
The move signals a fresh chapter for the Gulf Giants after a disappointing previous ILT20 season. The franchise had earlier thanked former head coach Jonathan Trott for his contribution and leadership.
Gulf Giants were champions in the inaugural ILT20 season in 2023 but struggled to maintain the same consistency in later campaigns.
Helmot recently met Pranav Adani in Ahmedabad to discuss the franchise’s long-term vision and preparations for the upcoming season.
‘Excited For The Journey’
Speaking after the appointment, Helmot said he was eager to begin the next phase with the franchise and work closely with players and support staff in building a successful campaign.
Pranav Adani, meanwhile, praised Helmot’s understanding of the global T20 ecosystem and highlighted his ability to develop winning environments and nurture talent.
With the ILT20 continuing to attract some of the biggest names in world cricket, the Gulf Giants will hope the experienced Australian can help the team rediscover its winning touch.
