Donovan Mitchell Erupts for Record-Tying 39 Second-Half Points as Cavaliers Level Series

Donovan Mitchell delivered one of the greatest playoff halves in NBA history as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Detroit Pistons 112-103 in Game 4 to level their Eastern Conference semifinal series at 2-2.

The Cavaliers guard exploded for 39 points in the second half alone, tying the NBA playoff record for most points scored in a single half — a feat previously achieved by Golden State Warriors legend Eric “Sleepy” Floyd in 1987.

Mitchell finished the night with 43 points after an astonishing turnaround following a difficult first half in which he managed just four points on 1-of-8 shooting.

Cavaliers Flip the Game After Halftime

Detroit appeared in control early and carried a 56-50 lead into halftime after strong performances from Caris LeVert and Cade Cunningham.

But the game changed dramatically after the break.

Mitchell came out aggressively in the third quarter, scoring 21 points in the period as Cleveland unleashed a devastating 24-0 run that completely shifted momentum.

The Cavaliers suddenly turned a halftime deficit into a commanding lead, leaving the Pistons struggling to recover from the offensive avalanche.

Mitchell attacked relentlessly from all areas of the floor, combining powerful drives, deep shooting and efficient free-throw conversion to overwhelm Detroit’s defense.

Support Cast Steps Up

While Mitchell dominated headlines, Cleveland also received crucial contributions from several teammates.

James Harden added 24 points and 11 assists, helping stabilize the offense during key stretches, while Evan Mobley delivered an impressive two-way performance with 17 points, eight rebounds and five blocks.

Cleveland’s defense also tightened significantly after halftime, limiting Detroit’s offensive rhythm and forcing crucial turnovers during the game-changing run.

For Detroit, Caris LeVert led the scoring with 24 points off the bench, while Cade Cunningham added 19 points as the Pistons failed to protect their early advantage.

Mitchell Joins Exclusive NBA History

Mitchell’s incredible second-half explosion instantly entered NBA playoff folklore.

According to NBA records, his 39-point half matched the postseason benchmark set nearly four decades ago by Floyd during the 1987 playoffs.

What made the performance even more remarkable was the contrast between Mitchell’s quiet opening half and his unstoppable dominance after halftime.

The Cavaliers star converted 12 of his 18 field-goal attempts in the second half while also making 12 of 13 free throws during the historic stretch.

Series Now Perfectly Balanced

The victory gives Cleveland fresh momentum after dropping the opening two games of the series.

The Cavaliers have now won back-to-back games to erase Detroit’s early advantage, setting up a crucial Game 5 as the series shifts back to Michigan.

With Mitchell playing at an extraordinary level and Cleveland’s supporting cast beginning to click, the Eastern Conference semifinal has quickly turned into one of the NBA playoffs’ most dramatic matchups.

The Way Ahead

Donovan Mitchell’s historic display has completely transformed the direction of the series and reminded the basketball world why he remains one of the league’s most dangerous playoff performers.

As the Cavaliers head into Game 5 with momentum firmly on their side, Detroit now faces the difficult challenge of slowing down a player who just produced one of the greatest scoring halves in postseason history.
