Blue Colts’ Asian Cup Hopes Dashed by Uzbekistan in Group D

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia :  India’s U-17 national men’s football team, known as the Blue Colts, saw their AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026 journey come to a disappointing end after a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Uzbekistan U-17 in their final Group D fixture on May 10, 2026 at the King Abdullah Sports City Hall Stadium.

Game Overview

The match started with both sides probing for openings, but it was Uzbekistan who struck first in the 32nd minute via a penalty after a defensive error forced an infringement in the box. Laziz Abduraimov converted the spot-kick with composure to give the defending champions the lead.

Once ahead, Uzbekistan controlled proceedings and eventually converted two more opportunities to secure a convincing 3-0 victory that sealed India’s elimination from the tournament.

What It Meant for India

Before kick-off, the Blue Colts knew that only a win would keep alive their dream of qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026. A draw might have been sufficient under extreme permutations, but the loss ensured India finished outside the qualification spots from their group.

This result compounded India’s earlier 4-0 defeat to Australia, which had already placed them on the back foot in Group D.

Squad Effort and Challenges

Head Coach Bibiano Fernandes had named a competitive squad ahead of the tournament, blending defensive solidity with attacking intent, but the challenge posed by the tournament’s defending champions proved too strong on the night.

Despite spirited defending early on, India’s young back line was eventually breached and couldn’t mount a comeback. The midfield, marshalled by captain Dallalmuon Gangte, tried to transition quickly but found limited space against Uzbekistan’s organised unit.

With this defeat, India’s U-17 side exits continental competition earlier than hoped, but the exposure against high-calibre opponents like Uzbekistan offers valuable experience for the future. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, maintain their reputation as one of Asia’s most consistent youth sides as they progress through the tournament.
