Teen Sensation Macklin Celebrini Named Canada Captain For 2026 IIHF World Championship

Macklin Celebrini has been named captain of Canada’s men’s national team for the 2026 IIHF World Championship, becoming one of the youngest players ever to lead the country at the prestigious tournament.

The 19-year-old San Jose Sharks star will wear the ‘C’ for Canada in Switzerland, while veteran forwards John Tavares and Ryan O’Reilly have been appointed alternate captains.

Celebrini’s appointment reflects his meteoric rise in world hockey after an outstanding NHL season and a strong international campaign with Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics, where he helped the team secure a silver medal.

Canada Banking On Youth And Experience

Hockey Canada’s squad combines emerging young stars with experienced NHL veterans as the country targets another world championship title. Celebrini is expected to play a central offensive role alongside established names like Tavares and O’Reilly.

The Canadian roster for the tournament includes several players with previous IIHF World Championship and Olympic experience, highlighting the depth available to the hockey powerhouse.

Major Leadership Milestone For Celebrini

Celebrini’s rise has been rapid since being selected first overall in the 2024 NHL Draft by the Sharks. The young centre quickly established himself as one of hockey’s brightest prospects and has already become a key figure for both club and country.

The 2026 IIHF World Championship will be held in Zürich and Fribourg, Switzerland, with Canada opening its campaign against Sweden.
