India is set to host the inaugural World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad, marking a major milestone in the global promotion of yogasana as a competitive sport.
The championship is expected to bring together participants from more than 40 countries, with athletes competing across multiple yogasana disciplines and categories.
Organisers described the event as a landmark step toward expanding international recognition for yogasana while showcasing India’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
Ahmedabad was selected as the host city due to its growing reputation for hosting international sporting and cultural events. Officials also highlighted Gujarat’s strong support for yoga promotion initiatives in recent years.
The championship will feature competitions based on flexibility, balance, endurance, posture precision, and artistic presentation. Various age groups and team events are also expected to be included in the programme.
Indian officials believe the event will help establish yogasana as a globally recognised competitive discipline while encouraging youth participation in fitness and wellness activities.
Yoga has witnessed massive international growth over the last decade, with International Yoga Day celebrations now held across dozens of countries annually.
The World Yogasana Championship is also expected to boost sports tourism and international engagement while reinforcing India’s position as the birthplace of yoga.
