Unacceptable Season Must Not Be Repeated Says Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has labelled the club’s campaign as “unacceptable” following another defeat, urging significant improvements behind the scenes ahead of next season.

The Reds suffered their 18th loss in all competitions after a 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, capping off a frustrating title defence under manager Arne Slot. Despite still being in contention for Champions League qualification, the season has fallen far below expectations.

Van Dijk admitted there are no excuses for the team’s performances and stressed the importance of accountability within the squad. He highlighted that Liverpool must regroup quickly and ensure such a campaign is not repeated.

Defensive struggles hurt Liverpool

Liverpool’s inconsistency has been a major concern throughout the season. The defeat at Old Trafford marked their 11th league loss, a worrying statistic for defending champions. Historically, only Leicester City in 2016-17 had a worse record as reigning champions.

The Dutch defender pointed out that consistency remains the biggest challenge in football and admitted the team has failed to maintain the high standards expected at the club. Liverpool currently sit fourth in the table, needing a few more points to secure Champions League football.

Focus shifts to rebuilding phase

Van Dijk also addressed criticism surrounding the team’s training routines, defending his teammates and insisting players are responsible professionals. He emphasised that the focus should remain on improving performances rather than outside narratives.

With only a few matches left before the international break, Liverpool’s immediate goal is to secure a top-four finish. However, the bigger task lies ahead, with Van Dijk making it clear that a strong rebuild is necessary to restore the club’s dominance.

The defender concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the club and its supporters, stating that both players and staff must work harder to bring Liverpool back to their best next season.
