How Arteta Could Set Arsenal Up Against Man City Clash

Mikel Arteta faces one of the biggest tests of his managerial career as Arsenal prepare for a decisive showdown against Manchester City in the title race.

Breaking down City’s pressing system

Under Pep Guardiola, Manchester City have used a 4-2-4 pressing shape to disrupt Arsenal’s build-up. With forwards blocking central passing lanes and wingers pressing aggressively, Arsenal have often been forced into long balls and uncomfortable positions.

This system limits access to midfielders like Declan Rice and pushes play toward the left side, where distribution has been less effective.

Midfield tweaks and build-up solutions

To counter this, Arsenal could rely on movements from Kai Havertz dropping deep to create overloads and link play. This approach has already shown promise, especially when combined with quick passing sequences to free up players like Ben White on the right.

Sudden positional rotations in midfield may also help break City’s man-oriented press, giving Arsenal brief windows to progress the ball more effectively.

Direct play and attacking adjustments

Without Bukayo Saka at full fitness, Arsenal’s attacking threat has reduced. Players like Gabriel Martinelli and Viktor Gyokeres will need to exploit spaces in behind, especially when City commit numbers forward.

Using a more central attacking approach, potentially involving combinations between Havertz and creative midfielders, could help Arsenal maintain possession higher up the pitch.

Defensive concerns and key threats

Arsenal’s defence must stay alert to emerging threats like Nico O’Reilly, whose unpredictable positioning has troubled opponents. His ability to arrive late into dangerous spaces makes him difficult to track.

Coordination between midfielders and defenders will be crucial to avoid lapses that could prove costly.

Fine margins in the title race

With momentum slightly favouring Manchester City, Arteta’s tactical flexibility and in-game decisions could define the outcome. Arsenal have shown glimpses of solutions, but consistency in execution remains the key challenge.

In a contest where margins are minimal, the right tactical calls could bring Arsenal closer to a historic Premier League triumph.
