IErling Haaland’s goal-scoring numbers at Manchester City could be affected by the recent absence of Matheus Nunes, whose contribution in wide areas has quietly become vital this season.
With defences increasingly focused on denying Haaland space inside the box, City’s attacking balance depends heavily on quality service from the flanks.
Nunes’ Creative Role On The Wing
Nunes’ crossing ability has been an underrated part of City’s attacking play. This season, he has already provided 10 assists for Haaland, with only Kevin De Bruyne (22) registering more.
Several of those assists have come from accurate, curling deliveries to the back post, allowing Haaland to use his height and strength effectively.
“Nunes has assisted Haaland through accurate crosses to the back post on more than one occasion this season,” reflects how important that connection has become.
His absence removes a reliable source of chances for the Norwegian striker.
Defensive Plans Against Haaland
Most Premier League teams now set up specifically to limit Haaland’s space. Deep defensive lines and compact midfields are used to cut off his runs and reduce his shooting opportunities.
The only major exception has been high-pressing sides like Bournemouth, who were punished earlier this season when Haaland scored twice.
As a result, City often struggle to find clear openings unless they move the ball quickly or stretch opponents wide.
Creating Space For The Striker
Without Nunes, City must find alternative ways to free Haaland. This includes direct dribbling, intelligent off-the-ball movement, and midfield runs that push defenders backward.
Speeding up transitions and attacking early before defences are set has also become crucial.
When City play at a slower tempo, Haaland is more easily isolated and crowded out.
Reliance On Wide Service
Going forward, Haaland will be hoping that City’s other wide players can match Nunes’ delivery.
Finding the 6ft 5in striker at the back post remains one of the most effective ways to unlock packed defences.
If that supply line weakens, City may find it harder to maximise their most lethal goal scorer.
For Pep Guardiola’s side, restoring creativity from the wings could be the key to keeping Haaland’s scoring numbers at their peak.
