MANCHESTER : Manchester City have emerged as serious contenders to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, according to sources close to BBC Sport — marking a potentially seismic twist in the January transfer market.
City’s interest has grown sharply following a defensive injury crisis that saw centre-backs Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias both leave Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea early due to knocks, while John Stones remains sidelined long-term.
Palace captain Guehi, 25, is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning he could depart on a free transfer in the summer if not moved this month — a scenario that could force Palace’s hand.
City have reportedly monitored developments closely, and sources say their interest “has progressed” although Pep Guardiola’s side will wait to assess the full extent of their defensive fitness before making a final decision this window.
Guehi’s journey over the past year has been dramatic: he came close to a £35 million move to Liverpool last summer, which collapsed on deadline day when Palace pulled the plug at the final hour.
The defender’s contract situation has attracted interest from top European clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid, although a January switch is yet to be confirmed.
Speaking earlier this season, Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed Guehi won’t sign a new deal and will leave next summer, intensifying speculation over his future.
Guardiola’s side face competition from Liverpool and other elite clubs — but the unique combination of City’s current defensive needs and Guehi’s contract status could create the perfect storm for a mid-season move.
